How to Practice Energy Healing Ethically & Legally with Midge Murphy

Posted on

Midge Murphy JD, PhD practiced entertainment law in California for over a decade, working with prestigious clients such as 20th Century Fox and Disney. After attaining her professional goals, she found herself on a quest to explore her spirituality and the emerging field of energy medicine with luminaries such as Norm Shealy MD, PhD and Caroline Myss. In 2001, she became the first attorney to earn a PhD in energy medicine, becoming an energy healing practitioner. Given her prior experience, that same year she was asked to teach a class on ethics and legal issues and in doing so realized that without appropriate education and training, both licensed and non-licensed practitioners that incorporate energy healing methods into their practices faced possible legal risks. As a result, Midge opened her consulting practice in ethics, legal issues and risk management strategies in the practice of and training in energy healing methods. Midge shares her personal story, and her experience ranging from hospice care and therapeutic touch to reiki and shamanic studies. We discuss how energy healing practitioners are healthcare practitioners, and the importance of practising in integrity, both professionally and legally. We define CAM (complimentary and alternative medicine) and how it fits into the western medicine paradigm. We cover legal and regulatory frameworks for energy healing practitioners in the USA and the changing laws regarding the practice of energy healing. We also discuss important considerations about liability and risk mitigation, such as working across state lines and guidelines about how to appropriately market and describe services. Midge shares what to look for in a professional training body for those interested in becoming certified practitioners. We discuss important ethical considerations such as informed consent, client confidentiality and integrating other practices with energy work. Midge also shares her views on the future of integrative medicine, and how a holistic approach to healthcare simply has to include energy. For over 15 years, Midge has been serving many of the best-known practitioners and training organizations in the field. She is recognized as a leading expert and a dynamic presenter and teacher, publishing her book Practice Energy Healing in Integrity, expanded and updated in 2020.
